Town went into this match looking to bounce back from their narrow defeat on Wednesday evening against Tavistock. There were plenty of positives to take from the 1-0 setback and after the opening day victory confidence was still high. Manager Kevin Hill made two changes giving Max Gillard and Jimmy Hinds their first competitive starts of the season.
The opening exchanges gave little indication of what was to follow as the visitors forced a series of corners without really threatening the goal and stand-in ‘keeper Grant Fisher did not have a save to make throughout the entire match such was the dominance of Town’s defence.
Aarron Denny had shown the trickery he is capable of creating space for himself and a shot past the post but the game turned on an eight minute spell in the first half when Ace High scored a very accomplished hat trick.
The first goal arrived on twenty eight minutes when the visiting custodian failed to hold a Karl Rickard shot and High reacted quickest to score. Two minutes later a surging run from Hinds, a measured pass and High was in the clear to race forward and score emphatically beating the ‘keeper by his near post. Nathan Cooper then had a shot turned behind for a corner before High completed his hat trick on thirty six minutes. This was arguably the best of his trio after good build up play and another forceful run and pass by Denny finding High who calmly chipped the stranded ‘keeper.
The second started in a similar vein with Denny setting up High but this time his shot was well saved. Denny had an effort that whistled past the post and whilst the visitors tried to up their game Town were more than capable in all areas of the pitch. The fourth goal arrived on seventy six minutes when substitute Dan Boere rolled back the years with good control and a sublime drag back to deceive the defence and score in an empty net.
Whilst the man of the match award rightly went to High there were a number of players who were in contention and whilst High took the plaudits this was overall a solid team performance that augers well for the remainder of the season.
